The Committee for the Release of Hostages and Detainees in Iraq

About us

The Committee was set up on 22 June 1993, as an independent and unincorporated humanitarian body to campaign on behalf of Iraqi citizens (Kurds and Arabs), Europeans, Kuwaitis and others detained and held hostage in Iraq from April 1980 onwards.

Objectives

To seek the safe release of these hostages and detainees in accordance with UN procedure No 1503 (XLVIII) and resolution 688.
To ascertain the numbers and details of these hostages and detainees including names, places, conditions and expected duration of detention, individual states of health and any criminal charges made against individuals.
To open a channel of communication with the Government of Iraq concerning these hostages and detainees
To obtain the approval of the Government of Iraq for an exchange of letters between the hostages and detainees and their families and friends.
To request internationally recognised bodies such as the UN Committee for Human Rights, the Red Crescent and Red Cross and prominent individuals to make direct representation to the Government of Iraq on behalf of these hostages and detainees.
To establish branches of the Committee in other countries.
To use the mass media and other appropriate means to publicise the situation of the hostages and detainees and any steps taken by the Government to resolve the situation.
